Bridebop.com Interviewed Elegant Event Entertainment for tips on How to Choose a Wedding DJ

In a recent interview published on prominent wedding planning website Bridebop.com, our very own DJ and co-founder Jason Jones was asked for his expert advice on “How to Choose a Wedding DJ”. After being chosen as the DJ for over 500 weddings of his own, and helping Brides and Grooms choose one of our other DJs for hundreds of other weddings, we’re pretty sure he knows a thing or two about the topic and Bridebop.com thought so too, and published this great article.
The interview includes tips and information such as:

  •  How to Determine the Style of DJ/MC you’re interviewing.
  • Picking music with the DJ, what type of music he/she recommends, and about making requests.
  • Learning more about The DJ’s Audio and Lighting Equipment and what you’ll need
  • Pricing and Services offered by the DJ
  • And lots more

Hiring a Wedding DJ? Interview in person, ask the following questions, get references, and trust your GUT!!

Hiring wedding vendors can be a very daunting task.
Hiring your Wedding DJ should not be so frightening. After all, the DJ is supposed to be the fun part of a wedding! Certainly there are a lot of things you need to know before you hire, but perhaps the most important thing you can do is to interview your DJ before you make a decision.
In my vast experience, I have found that clients who meet their DJs in person have a far better experience in choosing/hiring the DJ. Brides and grooms tend to get better pricing and more detailed explanations of what the DJ provides with his services when a meeting is held in person rather than over the phone or worse, through a series of very impersonal emails. When you take the time to meet in person, you have the opportunity to get to know the DJ up close and personal, and you should be able to make a much more informed decision based on his presentation or “pitch” as well as his appearance, his demeanor, and the all important “Vibe” or gut feeling you get from him.

Logistics and Location can be a problem for meeting in Person.
Many of our clients are located out of the area and cannot meet us in person before they hire, however we offer alternatives to in person meetings such as conference phone calls between the DJ and the bride and groom. If technology allows we also offer live Skype or video chat sessions where you can actually see the DJ as you interview. And as a final alternative, with our services if the client cannot meet us before they hire we do everything we can to schedule a meeting in person prior to the event. Read the rest of this entry »

7 Steps for hiring a Wedding DJ

Wedding DJ at a wedding reception with DJ equipment I want to keep this article positive, in line with my feelings about the profession of DJing. And that profession is a beautiful thing. It is filled with talented and outgoing people – I have one of the few jobs where my role is to spread happiness throughout a crowd and I play that role at a moment when most people are relaxed and ready to have a good time.

But sometimes I hear words like this, “You were the only DJs we met that weren’t old and fat!” Or this one, “You actually have a fun personality and you aren’t cheesy!” I don’t know the source of these sentiments but I am willing to admit that not all DJs are the same.

Here are 7 steps for hiring a wedding DJ.

1. Listen to your friends or other vendors when they refer you to a DJ. They have seen the DJ in action, they know your tastes by now, and they should be trusted. Our best clients always come from some type of referral.

2. Interview the DJ, not just the DJ company. Whether you do it on the phone or in person, always speak directly with the DJ you want to hire. Let the DJ walk you through his experience and style. I believe this is the best way to determine if the DJ is the right fit for you. Read the rest of this entry »

Should I tip my Wedding DJ

One thing we are often asked by our clients is “How much do I tip my wedding vendors?” Or, in our industry, “Should I tip my wedding DJ?” With wedding season upon us, here’s what we think.

There is no right or wrong answer here, but there are some general rules of etiquette and popular ideals about tipping wedding vendors. I found some blogs and websites that write on this subject and handle it very well. Find their links at the bottom of this post. _mg_6305c

From personal experience:

  • It feels great to be tipped, no matter the amount, as a show of appreciation for the hard work and dedication that we gave to an event. A card is also a nice gesture, but when something comes along with that card, we feel like the client really understood how much goes into what we do.

Wedding DJ saves the Cake!

As you can imagine, in my 11 year career as a DJ, particularly a Wedding DJ, I have seen just about everything, and if I haven’t seen it, one of my colleagues has, or I soon will.
I want to tell you a story that might help you better understand the role that a DJ has, especially at a Wedding.

Many clients assume that a DJ simply sits back and plays music, or maybe he performs a few tricks with his mixing abilities that the average I-tunes user can’t do. Clients should expect their DJ to have a sense of how to keep the guests involved, on the dance floor, and having a good time. Honestly, that is the majority of what Wedding DJs are supposed to do. But oh, there’s so much more to it.
Wedding DJs get the Bride Dancing
When I first began my career back in North Carolina, I didn’t have a clue about all the crazy things I was going to see and deal with as a DJ. I quickly learned that due to the simple fact that we have the microphone, Wedding DJs become the Person In Charge in almost any situation, whether we like it or not. Fortunately our clients like it that way and I feel that our DJs handle the responsibility really well. It is our job to convey to your guests the order of events, the plan of the party, the story of the celebration and virtually every major detail of the event. We must do this in such a way as to not be “Cheesy DJs” or obtrusive on the microphone. We can do it with music and with specially arranged and coordinated announcements and work done “behind the scenes.” We must be concise, to the point, friendly and upbeat all the while. But it also becomes our job to try to avert disasters, or to keep certain things from causing problems, things that go unnoticed by most people at an event. This of course, goes well beyond the ability to mix music properly or make the Grand Entrance announcement. This is the role of the DJ that many clients don’t see at first and usually won’t fully realize until the event is over and they are showering the DJ with many praises for his “above and beyond” performance all across the board.

So I want to provide you with an example of how a DJ can work well beyond the conventional “job description” to improve your event. Of course, we feel that these are common standards for our DJs, skills they must all possess in order to be an Elegant Event Entertainment Wedding DJ.

What follows is The Story Of The Falling Wedding Cakes, and how I, the DJ, went beyond the call of duty to help in a time of crisis!wedding cake, leaning wedding cake

If you’ve ever been to North Carolina in August, you know it can be very hot and humid. If you haven’t, then turn your shower as hot as it will go, close all the windows and doors and put the heat thermostat on 85-90 degrees. Now, stand there in a tuxedo for 6 hours. That’s what an August wedding in NC feels like. And honestly, it isn’t much better in Southern California, minus the really thick humidity.
At any rate, long about my 3rd year as a DJ, I was faced with an interesting problem at a mid August NC wedding. The Cake was delivered, it was a gorgeous 5 tier cake, very traditional, but absolutely beautiful. About 30 minutes after the cake was set up, the icing began to melt. The Bride and Groom finished taking pictures at the church and were in the limo heading to the reception site at about the same time I noticed the cake beginning to “lean” shall we say? I quickly alerted a catering staff member, who assigned someone to stand guard with a platter to catch the cake if it fell. Brilliant! Read the rest of this entry »
